Fight or Flight

Updated: Jul 19, 2020

Have you ever been in the situation where someone wanted to fight you? Can you remember what you did, the feelings you felt at the time? Did you want to fight? Did you want to run away? Or possibly just stand there and Freeze up?

I once had a parent come up to me and tell me that they wanted me to train their child to kick (butt) if they are ever bullied. The sense of wanting to protect your child outside of the home, away from you is understandable. In further conversation with this parent it was revealed that he was bullied for many years and just simply didn't want his son to go through the painful experience that he went through.

The secret to Fight or Flight is confidence! I teach students self-defense skills in Karate to help them feel confident in fighting. But the goal is for them NOT to fight! Does this make sense?

When I teach you to defend yourself, we are actually teaching you how to stop a fight. The biggest reason you are able to step away from fighting or not fighting is because you are not afraid. When you have the confidence to defend yourself you don't have a reason to fight? You have nothing to prove to anyone, because in your heart you know you are strong!
